Export limiting is a feature that is used to regulate the amount of energy that a solar system can export to the grid. The feature is implemented in the inverter and consumption meter. The inverter relies on information measured at your consumer mains cabling between your house and electricity grid.
Export limiting features work by reducing the maximum output power of the inverter, directly limiting the amount of energy that exports to the grid. This is done by adjusting the DC voltage level at which the inverter operates. By reducing the DC voltage, the inverter reduces its maximum output power. Homes connected to a single phase supply are limited to an export of 5kW or less.
Prevent Grid Issues
The purpose of export limiting is to ensure the solar system doesn’t export more energy than the grid can handle. This is important because excess energy export can cause voltage fluctuations on the grid, resulting in power quality issues or damage to grid infrastructure. By limiting the amount of energy that is exported, the grid voltages can be regulated more easily by the distributor.
Optimise Self-Consumption
Additionally, export limiting can be used to optimise the self-consumption of the solar energy produced by the system. By limiting the amount of energy that is exported, the system can encourage the use of more of the energy produced by the solar panels directly in the home, thereby reducing the energy purchased from the grid.
Export limiting is a feature that can be used to regulate the amount of energy that a solar system exports to the grid by adjusting the DC voltage level at which the inverter operates. It helps to ensure grid stability and optimize the self-consumption of the energy produced by the solar system. This may be a requirement from your local electricity distributor depending on your system size and cables to your home.
